Black Widow

I have already filled you in about Hawkeye, one of the two members of the Avengers that haven’t had their own film.  Black Widow did have a large role in Iron Man 2, and Scarlett Johannson did a great job portraying the femme fatale, but who is she? and what is her motivation? Natasha Romanova is basically a Russian Bond girl, but better in the fact that Bond would have his butt saved by her instead.  Let’s look at her past and how she’s developed in the Marvel Universe.

As with every great Marvel character, she was created by Stan “The Man” Lee in 1964 and first appeared in Tales of Suspense #52.  She was born in Russia and lost her parents to a fire.  At a secret U.S.S.R. base of young orphan girls she was trained in spying, sniping, infiltration, and oddly enough art; as well as physically and psycho-technologically enhanced.  It was called the “Black Widow Ops” and was encountered by both Capt. America and Wolverine in WWII which saved her from her fate.  She has a fling with Winter Soldier, but eventually marries a test pilot named Alexi Shostakav whom She is told is dead after one of her missions.

One of her first missions on U.S. soil was to seduce and kill American billionaire Tony Stark.  She is foiled by the alter ego of Tony, Iron Man, so attempts to pit Hawkeye against him to no avail.  Later in an attempt to defect, is captured by the KGB and brainwashed into attacking the newly organized Avengers.
